01 — Productions

Workflow Supervision

I offer my support to individual productions like feature films or series. Most typically I will help define the imaging pipeline, colour management and look development workflow, (meta)data management plan and other parts of the production's workflow. The tasks and responsibilities that I would typically take on when brought onto a project include:

  • Organising and leading workflow conversations early in pre-production
  • Documenting decisions into a thorough 'technical manual' for the production
  • Establishing data management and dailies creation workflows (including budget implications)
  • Building a colour pipeline that holds from set through editorial and post
  • Guiding the creative implications of HDR delivery
  • Attending camera, hair/make-up and other relevant tests
  • Breaking down the delivery requirements

Typical collaborators: DOP, DI Colourist, DIT, Postproduction Supervisor, Line Producer, Production Sound Mixer, Supervising Sound Editor, Script Supervisor, Editorial and DI teams.

Business Consultancy

As postproduction vendors foray into new working methods or see an increasing demand for large international delivery schedules, I help with defining the right path forwards and offering an objective outside view on existing workflows and processes. The exact services I provide vary widely based on the need, but could include:

  • In-depth analysis of technical workflows. Efficient use of hardware and software, effective upgrades, more structure in internal processes
  • Streamlining processes for in-house production teams, including international delivery schedules
  • Moving a DI vendor's colour pipeline to fully colour-managed and/or HDR-compatible
  • Exploring 'new' solutions: cloud, remote workflows and AI

A sparring partner to: C-suite, Technology Leaders, Picture Department Leads, DI Technicians, DI Producers, Colourists, Editorial and Sound teams.

Display Calibration

Precision and consistency are fundamental in high-end postproduction. I offer professional calibration for postproduction houses, DITs and cinematographers — ensuring reference monitors and projectors perform to industry standards, so colourists, DITs and cinematographers can trust their creative decisions.

While many modern monitors auto-calibrate for routine checks, my service adds the reassurance of an annual sanity check by an external, trusted expert. I also offer perceptual matching of multiple monitors within a room for a consistent viewing environment.

04 — Industry

Knowledge Transfer

Changing the world one production at a time is rewarding, but not the most efficient way to move the industry forward. I'm a fervent trainer and public speaker, with curricula spanning colour management, the history of production workflows, aspect ratio as a creative tool and the roles of the DIT. I've taught and presented at APostLab, Camerimage, Digital Production Challenge, IBC and many other places.

I've spoken on behalf of ARRI, Netflix, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers.

Audiences have ranged from Postproduction Supervisors, (Line) Producers and Studio Executives to DOPs, DITs and VFX Artists, seasoned veterans through to first-year students.
